Design

It is rather intriguing to me that some things become known by the name of their inventor or designer. For example “the original Ferris Wheel was designed and constructed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. as a landmark for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago The generic term Ferris wheel is now used for all such structures, which have become the most common type of amusement ride at state fairs in the United States”. So when you walk by a contraption that looks like this one in Irvine Spectrum, you just call it a Ferris Wheel, probably because your parents called it that, even if you don’t know the history behind the device or how it got its name.  After all, the World’s Columbia Exposition in Chicago was 124 years ago! Yet to this day a Giant Wheel is most commonly known as a Ferris Wheel.
At night this Ferris wheel in Irvine is lit up with an amazing light show, making it both visible and recognizable for quite a distance away. That is its purpose there, to draw attention to not only itself, but to the entire Spectrum Shopping Center...to draw you in and invite you to come near, and spend some time there.
When I see a spectacular display of clouds and light rays, or the vivid colors of a bird’s exotic plumage, or a magnificent panorama of fall leaves, or an exotic flower,  I am drawn in and invited to think of the Creator who designed and invented them.  I invite you to look around yourself this week and see what is attracting your attention and inviting you to look at the Creator in a new way, a way in which you too can respond to our Lord God and say “Glory!” Most importantly remember that as a Christian, bearing the name of Christ our Savior, you also are designed to reflect the Glory of God to those around you.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

 Matthew 5:16

I would be encouraged if you leave a comment to let me know how you saw the majesty of our Creator in your life this week!

  1. You pulled me in with your fascinating reflection on the Ferris Wheel and then beautifully used that image to reflect on God's glory around me. I am really enjoying your blog posts, Lori. I don't want to miss any of them!
